5,000 Doses of Covid Vaccine Wasted in 5 States

COVID-19 Vaccine

The wastage have largely been due to vaccinators not finding enough recipients after opening vials, which need to be used up within four hours.

5,000 doses of coronavirus vaccines have been wasted in some states since the vaccination drive began on January 16, data from five states suggests, with at least one – Tripura – reporting the losses to be more than the 10% threshold that the government has identified as possibly unavoidable due to the scale of the drive.

The wastage have largely been due to vaccinators not finding enough recipients after opening vials, which need to be used up within four hours. The problem is particularly hard to avoid since the two vaccines approved in India for use come in vials of 10 or 20 dosses

“So far, 1,623 or 11% of the total vaccine doses were wasted as many beneficiaries were not available during vaccination and droplets fall while shifting it to syringes. Another thing is that we need to use one vial within four hours after which it is of no use,” said Dr Kallol Roy, Tripura’s immunisation officer.

Authorities addressed the problem of wastage to some degree by allowing vaccinators to call in people who were not scheduled to get doses on a particular day, helping increase turnout to compensate for hesitancy. But, since January 16, only about 55 people have turned up for every 100 selected and invited for a dose during every session.

On Thursday, this number was – on an average – 49 out of every 100 in the close 500,000 vaccinations that took place.

In Punjab, this number was 1,200 doses, as per the state’s nodal officer for Covid-19, Dr Rajesh Bhaskar. He said the overall number was well below the permissible limit of 10%. “As one vial of the Covishield contains 10 doses, vaccinators have been asked try to give shots of vaccine when there are ten receivers together,” he said. The state conducts vaccination four days a week and no shots were given on Wednesday.

Health officials in Bihar too said the wastage was with within the 10% limit till now. However, wastage of Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin was more because of its larger vial size as compared to Serum Institute’s Covishield, an official said.

In the Patna’s Nalanda Medical College Hospital (NMCH), where the wastage was as high as 25% last week, fewer doses are now being lost. “In case of Covaxin, it is difficult to mobilise 20 health care workers at a time, given that hospital functioning should not be interrupted,” said Dr Binod Kumar Singh, superintendent of the Nalanda Medical College Hospital (NMCH) in Patna. Covshield was being administered at 295 of the total 301 session sites in Bihar

Third Indian tests positive for coronavirus on board quarantined Japanese cruise🛳🛳

One more Indian has been tested positive for the novel coronavirus disease(COVID-19) on the quarantined cruise ship Diamond Princess off the Japanese coast, the Indian Embassy in Japan confirmed on Friday.

This is the third confirmed case of Indian nationals testing positive for the deadly coronavirus, which has claimed lives of over 1,100 people in China.

On Wednesday, two Indian nationals had tested positive, Indian government sources said. The Diamond Princess cruise ship, currently docked off the coast of Yokohama, Japan, has 3,711 people on board, including 132 crew members and six passengers who are Indian nationals.

Japan quarantined the ship as one passenger who had disembarked at Hong Kong on January 25 was found to be infected with the virus on February 1. Taking into account the maximum incubation period of 14 days for the coronavirus, Japan has quarantined the cruise ship at Yokohama for 14 days.

The quarantine period started from February 5 and will end on February 19.

Meanwhile, Singapore on Friday reported nine new cases of coronavirus, taking the tally to 67.

The death toll due to the outbreak in China rose to 1,355 while the number of new cases soared by 14,840 – also a daily record – to a total of 48,206 cases, Reuters reported

Iran plane crashes:Tehran rebuffs claims is shot down in Ukrainian jet

Iran has again rejected suggestions that one of its missiles brought down a Ukrainian passenger jet near the capital, Tehran, on Wednesday.
Its civil aviation chief said on Friday he was “certain” that the plane was not hit by a missile.
He was responding to claims by Western leaders that evidence suggested the plane had been hit by a surface-to-air missile, possibly in error.
New video appeared to show a plane being hit by a projectile over Tehran.
The crash of Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 with the loss of 176 lives came just hours after Iran carried out missile strikes on two airbases housing US forces in Iraq.
US media have speculated that the airliner may have been mistaken for a warplane as Iran prepared for possible US retaliation.
■ What we know about downed flight PS752
■ Plane crash victims ‘were the best of us’
■ Why were so many Canadians on the plane?
Victims of the crash included 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians and 11 Ukrainians as well as nationals from Sweden, the UK, Afghanistan and Germany.
Iran has promised a full investigation. However, TV images from the crash site on Thursday showed a bulldozer helping to clear debris away, raising concerns that vital evidence could have been removed.

What does Iran say?

At a news conference on Friday, Iran’s Civil Aviation Organisation (CAOI) chief Ali Abedzadeh repeated his view that a missile was not the cause of the crash.
“The thing that is clear to us and that we can say with certainty is that this plane was not hit by a missile,” he told reporters.
“As I said last night, this plane for more than one and a half minutes was on fire and was in the air, and the location shows that the pilot was attempting to return.”

On Thursday, government spokesman Ali Rabiei accused the US and its allies of “lying and engaging in psychological warfare” in their speculation over the cause of the accident.
An Iranian official told the BBC on Friday that there was documentation to prove that the plane had a mechanical issue

before take-off. It was not signed off for flying, but Ukrainian airline officials had overruled these objections, the official said, without giving further details.

What has been said about a possible missile strike?

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he had received intelligence from multiple sources indicating the plane was shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile, adding that it was possible that this was unintentional.
“This reinforces the need for a thorough investigation,” he said. “Canadians have questions and they deserve answers.”
But he said it was too early to apportion blame or draw any conclusions, and refused to go into detail about the evidence.
■ Who were the victims of the crash?
■ Tributes to three British nationals killed
The Ukrainian flight was headed to the Canadian city of Toronto via the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson echoed Mr Trudeau’s words and said Britain was working closely with Canada and other international partners affected by the crash.
Speaking in Canada, UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said British nationals were advised not to travel to Iran, “given the body of information that UIA Flight 752 was shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile, and the heightened tensions”.

Newsweek quoted a Pentagon and senior US intelligence officials, as well as an Iraqi intelligence official, as saying they believed flight PS752 was hit by a Russian-made Tor missile.
Ukraine said on Friday that the US had passed on “important data” about the crash to President’s Volodymyr Zelensky. The president is due to speak later on Friday with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, a government reporter said

Oops, Tulsi Gabbard Did It Again!

So, it finally happened — Donald Trump is officially impeached, three long months after Nancy Pelosi first announced an official impeachment inquiry. To refresh your memory, here’s a quick recap of what happened in that time: Trump trolled a 16-year-old environmental activist, we’ve endured three Democratic debates, Harry Styles rose to hottest man alive status, and finally, Tulsi Gabbard revealed herself as the Democratic party’s very own super-villain.

It occurred sometime in the last three months, after Hillary Clinton boldly stated that Gabbard was “the favorite of the Russians,” which the Representative from Hawaii did not receive, um, gracefully. Shortly after, in the November debate, Gabbard took some deep digs on her fellow presidential candidates. She even managed to throw in another jab at Clinton, calling her “the personification of the rot that has sickened the Democratic Party.”

And then there was the impeachment vote — the long-awaited moment where party lines were explicitly drawn as the Dems prepared to vote in favor of impeachment on two articles, with Republicans voting against. Tusli Gabbard, however, decided to take matters into her own hands. When called for her vote, she responded: “Present.”

By voting “present” for Trump’s impeachment, Gabbard actively abstained from the voting process. “I came to the conclusion that I could not in good conscience vote either yes or no,” Gabbard said in a statement following the final vote.

The presidential hopeful has openly discussed her mixed feelings on the impeachment inquiry throughout numerous debates, and when it came down to the final decision, her ambivalence for the process outweighed making a final decision. And this definitely didn’t fly with her fellow members of Congress.

“Voting ‘present’ is a very tough position to be in,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told Buzzfeed News. “To not take a stand in a moment that is so consequential, I think it’s quite difficult.”

According to AOC and a number of other constituents, most would have rather seen Gabbard vote “yes” or “no” rather than abstain. “I mean, what is the point? I don’t know what this woman thinks she’s accomplishing by that — I guess getting attention, former Sen. Claire McCaskill told Salon. “We’re talking about her, and really we shouldn’t spend any time talking about her.”

But Gabbard, who is accustomed to disappointing the Democratic party, didn’t see it that way. Instead, she said her abstention from the vote stood as a larger protest. “Removal of a sitting President must not be the culmination of a partisan process, fueled by tribal animosities that have so gravely divided our country,” she said.

Naturally, The View host and self-proclaimed “Mother Of Dragons” Meghan McCain weighed in to praise Gabbard’s choice — or lack thereof. She said that Gabbard had “balls of steel” for her “present” vote.

Whether or not Gabbard’s present served a higher purpose in her mind (or anyone’s), her choice to abstain from Trump’s impeachment certainly got her noticed – a skill she’s honed well. And it might be a necessary one, considering she won’t be there to troll her fellow candidates at Thursday night’s sixth Democratic debate.

THANK YOU!!!

Protection of life in the arctic sea 🌊

Climate change is making Arctic waters more available to vessels, raising the controversial prospect of more industrial-scale fishing. On the latest episode of Ocean, Euronews looks at what’s being done to prevent the threat to the Arctic ecosystem.

Greenland is warming. Among other things, this means longer fishing seasons. Between the icebergs of Ilulissat, it’s a gold rush. Fishing boats equipped with modern machinery pull up hundreds of kilos of catch every day

Ilulissat fisherman Martin Jørgensen is worried:

“There’s too much fishing going on around here. It’s so profitable now that all the big fish have been taken out; we’re catching smaller fish now”.

Sleds, dogs, & boats

To be closer to buyers, fishermen are moving from coastal villages to cities. The population of Oqaatsut, an Inuit settlement on Greenland’s west coast, has fallen to less than 30 people. Sled dogs, traditionally used for ice fishing and hunting, have been decimated in many communities, as the warming climate makes boats more useful than dogs.

”The sledding used to start in October,” says Oqaatsut fisherman Steen Gabrielsen, “but now that there’s not enough ice, we can just use boats all year round.”

Changing ecosystem

As the seas get warmer, new species of fish are finding their way to Greenland’s coasts — these include mackerel, herring, Atlantic bluefin tuna and cod. But not everyone is happy. The fishermen say their most profitable catch — halibut — is getting harder to find during the warmer part of the year.

“Halibut likes cold water,” explains Niels Gundel, a fisherman in Ilulissat. “As summers become warmer and longer it moves away, to stay where it’s cool.”

Imminent danger

In the future, retreating sea ice and changes in fish stocks could bring commercial fishing fleets into the unprotected international waters around the North Pole.

Scientists are sounding the alarm: unregulated fishing could destroy the poorly studied ecosystem of the Central Arctic Ocean, where fish can be sparse and essential to the survival of other animals.

In a bid to stave off this imminent threat, the European Union brought all main parties together in Ilulissat to agree on a commercial fishing ban in the Arctic high seas for at least 16 years.

This landmark international agreement was signed by the EU, Canada, China, Denmark (including Greenland and the Faroe Islands), Iceland, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Norway, Russia and the United States. Together, these parties represent some 75% of global GDP.Arctic catch 2017

Under this legally binding agreement, the Central Arctic area – roughly the size of the Mediterranean Sea – will remain off-limits for fishing fleets, at least until scientists confirm that fishing in the region can be done sustainably.

Precautionary Approach

At the Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø, Professor Tore Henriksen heads the Norwegian Centre for the Law of the Sea.

“This agreement is reflecting the precautionary approach, that when you have little or very inadequate information you should act cautiously and only regulate, and adapt the regulation, according to the information you have,” Professor Henriksen explains. “Previously, you started fishing, and then you regulate it. And then at that stage, it could be too late.”

Mapping the arctic seas

The future of the ban will depend on the findings of the scientific consortium led by professor Pauline Snoeijs Leijonmalm. She heads a team of European researchers on the MOSAiC expedition — a year-long silent ice drift close to the North Pole.

“Normally, when the icebreaker moves through the ice, you will not get good acoustic data, because there’s too much sound from the icebreaker. Now we’ll have a whole year of acoustics, and it is just a dream!”

As well as using sonar, the EU-supported researchers will record videos with a deep-water camera, take environmental DNA samples at various depths, and for the first time catch some Central Arctic fish.

“We will be able to analyse its stomach, its stable isotopes, its fatty acids,” Professor Leijonmalm says. “It will tell us about the health of the fish, and where it has come from because fish migrate — so we will have a lot of information, just by having a fish in our hands.”

The discoveries of this and future expeditions will determine whether fishing in the Central Arctic Ocean can be done sustainably — or whether these high seas should remain untouched for the decades to come.

US Mormon children were killed in Mexico attack

At least five US citizens, a mother and four children, have been killed in a violent attack by suspected drug cartel gunmen in northern Mexico.

The victims were said to be in the LeBaron Family linked to a breakaway Mormon community which settled in Mexico several decades ago.

Video of the scene shows a burnt-out car. Some victims may have burned alive and several more people are missing.

Media says that the attack was caused by identity mistake

LeBaron family members were quoted as saying a group of three mothers and their 14 children had set off in a convoy of cars from Bavispe in Sonora state and were heading to La Mora in the neighbouring state of Chihuahua.

They were ambushed by gunmen in Bavispe. A burnt-out SUV was later found by the side of the road with the remains of the victims.

Family members said that those inside the SUV were Rhonita Miller LeBaron and her four children: six-month-old twins, an eight-year-old and a 10-year-old.

Two other women and their 10 children were shot at as they tried to flee.
Some reports say more dead were found in another location, but some of those who fled are believed to have survived.
The Chihuahua state attorney said the number of dead remained “confusing” with family members speaking of nine people killed and local media reporting the death toll could be as high as 12.
Rhonita Miller LeBaron’s cousin, Julian LeBaron, called it “a massacre”.

The attack is thought to be have been carried out by a drug cartel which operates between the two states.

The governments of Chihuahua and Sonora issued a joint statement saying that an investigation had been launched and additional security forces had been sent to the area.

The victims are members of a community called Colonia LeBaron which was founded by a breakaway Mormon group in the first half of the 20th Century after the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the US starting cracking down on polygamy.

The community now includes both Mormons and Catholics who have settled there. Members are known for standing up to local drug gangs and speaking out about the high levels of cartel violence.

Possible international repercussions

Even by the standards of Mexico’s brutal drug war this was a particularly horrific attack.

A video reportedly filmed and posted online by a distraught family member shows a completely burnt-out car on a hillside, said to be on the road to La Mora.

The violent ambush will likely have international repercussions too as many of those killed were US citizens.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has said he is employing a policy of non-violence and non-confrontation with the country’s powerful cartels, but his critics accuse him of lacking any kind of coherent security strategy.

Pressure is growing on the government after an embarrassing episode last month when the police in Sinaloa released the son of the jailed drug lord, El Chapo Guzmán, after they were outgunned by his men.

While local media said that the convoy of cars may have been mistaken for that of a rival gang, the LeBaron community has been targeted by the cartels in the past. In 2009, Erick LeBaron was kidnapped for ransom. The community took a stand and said it would not pay for his release as that would just encourage future kidnappings.

Erick LeBaron was eventually released without a ransom being paid. But months later, his brother Benjamin, who had led the campaign for Erick’s LeBaron’s release, was beaten to death. Benjamin’s brother-in-law was also killed.

This area of northern Mexico is being fought over by two rival gangs, La Línea, which has links to the larger Juárez cartel, and “Los Chapos”, which is part of the Sinaloa cartel.

In 2010, Julian LeBaron published an article in The Dallas Morning News calling for Mexicans to stand up against organised crime.

The Colonia LeBaron community has in the past demanded to be allowed to create its own security force.

Turkey’s Erdogan vows to ‘crush heads’ of Kurdish fighters 🤯💣🧨

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says that Turkey will “crush the heads” of Kurdish fighters if they do not withdraw from a planned safe zone area in northern Syria.
Turkey agreed on Thursday to suspend an offensive for five days to allow the Kurds to retreat from the area.
But on Saturday both sides accused the other of violating the ceasefire.
Ankara views the Kurdish forces as terrorists and wants to create a “safe zone” buffer inside Syria.
Despite the temporary ceasefire, some sporadic violence has continued – particularly around the border town of Ras Al-Ain.

What did Erdogan say ?

Speaking at a televised event in the central Turkish province of Kayseri on Saturday, President Erdogan said that if Kurdish fighters did not withdraw by Tuesday evening – as agreed in the ceasefire – “we will start where we left off and continue to crush the terrorists’ heads”.
The Turkish leader is due to hold talks next week with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin. On Saturday he said that if those talks did not produce a solution, Turkey would “implement its own plans”.
■ Turkey’s Syria offensive explained in four maps
■ Viewpoint: Syria could be beginning of end for Trump
■ Senior Republican attacks Trump over Syria
Turkey’s defence ministry earlier accused Kurdish forces of carrying out 14 “provocative” attacks in the last 36 hours, mostly in Ras Al-Ain, but insisted Turkish forces were fully abiding by the agreement.
However, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) accused Turkey of violating the ceasefire.

They also accuse Turkish troops of failing to create a safe corridor for the evacuation of civilians and wounded people from the besieged town.
On Saturday the SDF urged US Vice-President Mike Pence, who helped to broker the temporary ceasefire, to pressure Turkey to allow the passage of civilians.
“Despite the constant communication with the American side and the promise made by them to solve this problem, there has not been any tangible progress in this regard,” the SDF said in a statement.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) alleges that deliveries of humanitarian aid have also been prevented from entering Ras Al-Ain.

The monitor group said on Friday that the civilian death toll from the Turkish operation had now risen to 86.
Between 160,000 and 300,000 people have reportedly fled their homes since the offensive started 10 days ago.
